It needs to be said

The fact is, citizens don't have any power in the state or federal government. They are handed two choices, neither of which they particularly want.

The majority of Americans don't participate into politics because, for the most part, their vote doesn't matter.

Those who do participate are typically well off, middle class, or seek to mimic the culture of middle class America. These are people who have an interest in mantaining the status quo of American culture, including gross wealth inequality, mass incarceration, endless military intervention, materialism, celebrity culture, etc.

So yes, trump is a symptom of America's culture, but also a symptom of the disconnect between the actions of the ruling class and the will of the people.
