On Wednesday, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton urged state legislators to consider increasing the penalty for resisting arrest from a misdemeanor to a felony. The change, he argued, would help New Yorkers "get around this idea that you can resist arrest. You can't."

I'm not going to argue with you since it's clear you have a very particular worldview and you're probably not willing to change it. Let me explain my points a little bit and then I'll leave it at that.

Cops do more than what we ask them to do. They harass people to fill quotas and generate money for the city. They disproportionately police black and brown people despite comparable rates of crime between blacks and whites. They kill innocent people, sometimes egregiously breaking the rules, and rarely if ever face any criminal consequences. Even cops who are shown to be corrupt rarely have more than getting fired or suspended if that. So no not all cops are thugs, but many are thugs in uniform.

Like putting someone in a chokehold is against the NYPD's own policy. Yet when someone dies because of it, no disciplinary action was taken and no trial was even had. That sense of immunity emboldens cops, or at least the "bad" ones to abuse their power of authority.

As a black male in NYC I've been stopped and harassed by cops several times for no other reason than being black and walking down the street. I've seen hatred in somebody's blue eyes and their blue uniform that sent chills down my spine. I've been out in handcuffs when I've done nothing wrong. Seeing the amount if innocent people cops get away with beating up, harassing or killing every year, and seeing the way they respond to criticism and often get away with things, would make any reasonable person afraid of getting to near them, especially if you're a "minority". Because you don't have to be a "criminal" to be abused by them.

I'm trying really hard not to assume you're white so none of this stuff ever happens to you so you find it easy to assume all good are good and people who have bad interactions with them "must've had it coming" or something like that. Well let me tell you I'm a law abiding citizen and I'm wary of cops and feel unsafe when they're around because they have no checks and balances and I know they target people who look like me because of racist assumptions.

I never had it coming when I was approached by them. Unless you call being black probable cause, in which case I'd say you're just as racist as unknown portion of them are.

So yeah, I gather you don't know a lot of black or brown people.

I'm not trying to change your mind since it's obvious your experience has been sheltered from this sort of thing for some reason and that's good for you. It's just not like that for all of us and there is a lot of evidence to the contrary.

But anyway, good day to you sir.
