Online 'friend' sold me over $1000 worth of gift cards, which later disappeared from my account when the company found out they were invalid (I, of course, had no idea). Do I have any grounds to sue him on?

I bought over $1000 worth of Amazon gift cards from a friend for about 85% of their value. I applied them to my account before sending payment, and I thought everything was fine and dandy.

About a week later, the balance disappeared from my account. The company told me that it is because the gift cards were found to be invalid. They didn't specify how, but I am assuming CC fraud. The company could not refund me the amount, which makes sense.

My e-friend had actually bought the gift cards from someone else and resold them to me. I knew this when I purchased the cards from my friend. However, the online friend told me that they had the ID of this person at the time I agreed to the transaction, which they later admitted was untrue. The online friend also said some sketchy-seeming things as if they intended to scam -- again, this only came out after the balance had disappeared, and before that they were acting reputable/professional. I have logs of all my chats with them, although I don't know if it will help any.

We both live in the US, but in different states. I have proof of their identity. I paid them for the cards through my bank, and I believe there is a record in my bank showing the purpose of the payment was "gift cards".

So yeah... How should I proceed? Do I have any ground to stand on here?
