Photos reveal more than 200 bright blue Arctic lakes have started bubbling with methane gas

Great. That doesn't change anything.

My comment is factual. Historically there have been more rapists, murderers, and generally bad people than there have been people who are world-changing geniuses.

Also, the reason that the human race progresses is easy. It's based on biology and optimism bias. Most people who have kids think the exact same way you do--they think that the world is "good enough," and preemptively assume that their kid will produce more good than evil in the world. Even though, just like you said, there's no way to predict that. As soon as you decide to have a kid, you're making a gamble. You don't know what the outcome will be, and more importantly, you cannot change their behavior. Certainly, you can influence them at a young age, but come adulthood, they've carved their own path. Will it be a path of mediocrity? Drug abuse and alcoholism? Rape and murder? Oh no, of course not. Not my perfect angel. Even though one in every 12 people in the US abuse alcohol. Even though 45 million people in the US are below the poverty line. Even though you acknowledge that it is so incredibly easy to be unsuccessful and lead an unfulfilling life. But none of that matters, right?

Oh, and lets not forget the things you can't control, like depression, physical disabilities, cancer, sicknesses, diseases. Nope, those things will never happen to my baby.

And before you say to me that those things are just facts of life, let me ask you: you really just accept that? You just accept all of these things, which are real and probable. You accept all of the pain and suffering that a person is subjected to when they are born without a second thought? That's you. That's every single person who has decided to have a child regardless of the aforementioned facts.

130 million babies are born every year.

Yeah, and that's a mistake. That's why we're in the situation we're in right now. That's why 7.3 billion people are starving in the world. It's why we have wars, its why greed exists. All of these things are byproducts of humanity. And the only reason we keep going is because sex feels nice and the vast majority of people can't forego their optimism biases. Why do you think there are couples who continue to have children in war-torn areas like Syria? Why do you think? Because humans are foolish creatures. We're foolish and selfish, and so absorbed in our twisted, unnecessary need to keep "moving forward" that we won't collectively take a moment to pause and ask ourselves if this is even worth it.
