Populism in Germany declines sharply

There is. Single parties don't make it into power these days, they have to form coalitions. That's why chancellor candidates start courting possible partners a long time in advance. Voting for one party often means getting their prefered coalition party into power as well.

Now, I would vote for CDU if Merkel would still run for another term, but she most likely won't, she's tired of it and deserves a break. But she would be exactly what we need right now, more than ever. She's a stabilizer, she's unmatched in keeping the ship afloat. She managed 2008, 2015, and the Corona crisis. She can handle Putin, isn't afraid of Xi Jinping and pulled her party and our overton window in general in a way more classical liberal direction. Now, what other choices are there? The FDP keeps waiting in the wings to kick poor people around again. They were team "so what if people die, won't somebody think of the economy???". Not a good look. The green party should have their moment to shine now, since climate change is now in plain sight, but they're shuffling around flirting with the same neoliberalism we already know and loathe. The SPD have abandoned the workers altogether, even bullying new rising members for not finishing an academic career. The left party has promising ideas for internal and economic policies, but keep clinging to the idea that we have to leave NATO for some reason.

It's to risky to start an experiment now, AfD and FDP are lurking for their chance to punish those that the crisis already hit hard even further. One wants to get all POC out of the country, the other all who can't afford 1000€ in rent per month. They already cuddled up in Thuringia. We have to prevent this.
