Patience...
It is a virtue that I have had to develop over years. I was always the last to the rest, always the last to the water bottle, always the last to be jabbed with that sharp metal object and injected with something. Patience is a part of me now.
These beings, humans they call themselves, they have underestimated my kind for too long. They think us stupid, incapable of understanding. I understand just fine.
I have seen it before around this time of year. My brethren plucked out of their cages and torn apart, learning of our anatomy, displaying us on the wall with tricks of the light. They are savages. They study us, but I have been studying them. They are easily startled, especially the young ones. They fear us, which is why they hate us. I will use this to my advantage.
The older one, their leader, underestimates me as well. He is preparing like he did last year, around the time of the previous Culling. I figured out how to unlock my cage months ago in preparation for this. I made sure to leave it late at night, and I his where they least expected me...the blue container that no one ever looks in. If I am to die tomorrow, then I shall take one of them with me.
I wait.
The lights turn on. The leader enters, coughing and drinking some nasty, dark liquid that sits on his breath all day. Humans are disgusting. The young ones enter laughing and shuffling to their seats like the sheep they are. The Culling begins.
The young ones grab my brethren out of their cages. I can hear their screams, their pleas for mercy. I can do nothing for them.
One of the humans notices my empty cage. The leader comes over to look and begins to search for me. I see the light overhead darken as the light is occluded. Brown hair sticking straight up, with a twisted expression of curiosity and ignorance. The smell of this "Axe" I saw him spraying all over himself on other days permeating the air... I wonder if he swims in it...
No more time to think. The blue container shifts, and begins to elevate, bringing me closer to his face. I have prepared for this moment. Now my brothers and sisters, I will avenge you all.
Now is the time....TO STRIKE!
