Is reading erotica the same/as bad as watching porn?

It's certainly not the same. No two pieces of content are the same, even if they depict the same story.

Overall the difference between erotica and porn depends on your tastes and the content. Some erotic literature depicts rape, incest, and child-porn content, although most does not. Some porn is very "vanilla" and depicts respectful, enjoyable interactions, although increasingly in the modern era, most does not. I think it's more common to develop a respectful relationship in written erotica than it is in visual erotica, because of the nature of the medium. You also can be more immersed in what the participants are feeling, as if you were participating yourself, rather than being externalized and limited to voyeurism. No matter how many heart eyes and sweat drops are drawn on a comic book page, I will never be as certain of the characters feeling as I am with a paragraph of dirty talk and describing how goosebumps form after a finger slides... The skill of the storyteller matters most in erotica, and the visuals matter most in porn and erotic comics.

There is a stereotype that "men are sexually aroused by sight" and "women are sexually aroused by relationships" but this is not a very firm rule and I am always happy to see people exploring outside of those areas. For this reason, I think men should absolutely create and read more erotic literature and women should become more involved in the production of visual porn (not as actresses but as directors and regulators). Erotic comics and graphic novels, especially japanese doujinshi and original erotic works, are an interesting middle ground that are created and consumed pretty equally by men and women without obviously breaking any stereotypes.
