Rivera: Panthers have to evolve. Possible coordinator/coaching changes?

I think that if there's on area we should really evolve at is special teams. We have one of the fastest return men in the game... yet we are lucky if we see a return over 15 yards in any game. I don't remember us ever doing a successful onside kick. And it's entirely too common for us to get a penalty on returns and punts. Given Dehaven's situation I understand the team was hesitant to make a move before. But that has to be fixed.

I have mixed feelings about Mike Shula. I really don't think he's that much worse than Chud was... but I hated Chud. I always wanted us to get Kyle Shannahan back when he was available for an entire fucking year. And everyone told me I was stupid. But look at him now... We need someone with a creative mind like that.

The defensive coaching staff I think is magnificent. But there's some holes and gaps that need to be fixed. There's also an element of predictability that I think some of that teams (Falcon's especially) have really got figured out. We need to find a way to be more unpredictable. But I think if we can get our secondary beefed up a bit more, we'll have the confidence to blitz more and become more effective again. The foundation is there.

And finally of course I want to see Ron be more aggressive. For example, I don't know how many games I've watched where we have the ball and we're down in the second quarter... yet we just take the knee to go to half time. Every time we have the ball and time on the clock I want us to try to score. And then how many games have we been up by a lot of points, but then we stop blitzing and go to prevent defense. Every time the defense is on the field is an opportunity for a turnover. We have to play with that mindset.. That every time the defense is on the field we are trying to get a turnover. Every time the offense is on the field we're trying to get a touchdown. 3 and out is nice... field goals are good. But to be champions you have to play with the heart of a champion. And even in our 17-2 year I felt like some of the guys on the team still lacked the heart of champions. We goofed off, laughed, danced and had fun... which is great. But it's not what champions do. It's up to him to put that mindset in our guys. It's up to him to put an end to Cam's "I win my way" mentality. You win whatever fucking way you have to win. That shit makes me cringe so hard. Your way isn't always going to work. You have to be willing to do what is best for your team and for yourself. And that means working together with the team to get shit done. Don't compete with every other player on the field. It's our team vs their team. Not Cam vs everyone else.
