Roger Goodell denies NFL told Patriots to suspend staffers

Not surprised I have to do this again, but disappointed. Even though all of the information is available online (free of charge and effortless to access), fellas like you continue to either ignore it or struggle to comprehend.

Allow me to go point by point. But first I'll start with your last remarks, because the rest is a lot of reading.

As far as physical evidence goes, I believe the patriots that it is possible that the loss in pressure could have been cause by the environment. I don't think it proves 100% that it could have only been caused by environmental factors. The fact that the most damning evidence isn't the physical evidence but the text messages, the inconsistencies(lies) in Brady's interview, The unusual change in communication between Brady and JJ following the AFCCG, and the lack of cooperation by both the patriots and Tom Brady, despite public messages that they were, lead me to believe that it's very likely that members of the Patriots organization including Tom Brady, tampered with footballs not only for the AFCCG but for multiple game in the 2014 season and likely at least one game in previous seasons.

There are two possible outcomes with the physical evidence:

  • The footballs were doctored and the weather dropped the PSI, so the balls would therefore fall outside of the Ideal Gas Law range
  • The weather alone dropped the footballs and they would fall within the Ideal Gas Law range

Based off of Walt Anderson's testimony (which is held to be gospel everywhere else but here), he used the gauge that shows that shows they fell within range. They could NOT have been within range if they were doctored.

And even if you use the numbers that were lower than the Ideal Gas Range (second gauge), the weather deflation STILL would have occurred. That means that the Patriots, at most, would have deflated each ball by 0.4 PSI (on average.

So what you're saying is that Brady, JJ, and McNally were able to hatch such an elaborate scheme that it could stop Wells and his multi-month investigation from finding any conclusive evidence to deflate footballs, all in an effort to decrease them by less than half a pound of pressure.

They planned a HEAT style heist to steal a roll of nickles?

But that's not even the crux of the argument. Because if the science and Walter Anderson's recollection is right, and the balls are within the Ideal Gas Range, that means that deflation was impossible - literally could not have occurred - because the balls would have been lower.

No matter what any other piece of evidence "looks fishy", the numbers would not make deflation impossible. Weather deflates balls by X amount no matter what happens. So whether they did deflate or didn't, the weather made them softer. If they fall within the Ideal Gas Range, they cannot have been deflated intentionally by someone else.

Read this from The Washington Post and tell me that the Wells Report isn't biased.

Brady didn't text JJ. Brady hadn't text or called him for six months before the AFCCG. He did personally talked to JJ about the inflation rate from the jets game, which JJ for some reason thought was relevant to a guy, McNally, who has no job responsibilities to handle, inflate, or deflate footballs. And then JJ says Tom asked about McNally even though Tom doesn't know him.

Ted Wells Report, pg 18

Brady sent Jastremski text messages seemingly designed to calm Jastremski (“You good Jonny boy?”; “You doing good?”). For his part, Jastremski sent Brady text messages confirming that he was okay (“Still nervous; so far so good though”)

So here are two guys that work together for 20 years but aren't on a first name bases and everyone says they never interact but Tom Brady is all of a sudden concerned about McNully's stress levels? How would Tom know anything about what McNally was going through? I find that very odd. And the he in that text message is definitely Tom. I base this fact not only on the previous text message where McNully says "Tom sucks" but also on how McNully replies with "Fuck Tom" That's an odd way to respond to someone concerned about your having trouble selling tickets because your sister isn't doing well. But not really an odd way to respond to someone passively blaming you for not deflating the footballs to his liking even though your taking a big risk to do it.

For example, the Oct. 17, 2014 text string between Mr. Jastremski and Mr. McNally (referring to Mr. McNally’s “stress” about having to get something “done”) is quoted or paraphrased no fewer than fifteen (15) times. (pgs. 5, 15, 17 (three times), 77, 78, 79, 83, 85, 87, 123, 126 (twice), 127) Mr. Jastremski and Mr. McNally were obviously uninhibited texters, sending communications with no thought that anyone else would ever see them. They certainly would not have cursed at the team’s quarterback if they thought their texts would ever see the light of day. Perhaps most revealing, then, is that not a single text states that: (i) Brady wanted footballs set below 12.5 psi; (ii) there was a plan to deflate footballs after the referee inspected them; or (iii) there was any actual such deflation. Nonetheless, the report assumes that every text reference to inflation or deflation of footballs suggests there was a plot to improperly deflate footballs after the referee’s inspection. In reality, there is simply no basis to assume that conclusion.

The “espn” reference in this string of jocular texts was part of their banter and related to the “new kicks.” Mr. Jastremski had made it clear to Mr. McNally over time that his (Jastremski’s) boss would not be happy with him were he to give away sneakers to Mr. McNally. That fact is quite explicit in a number of their texts. (p. 82 — after texting about possibly getting Mr. McNally sneakers and apparel, Mr. Jastremski writes: “unless Dave [his boss, Dave Schoenfeld] leaves the room tomorrow then it’ll wait till next week”). Getting sneakers or apparel for his friend Mr. McNally, in short, meant Mr. Jastremski would have to do so behind his boss’s back. They teased each other about whether Mr. Jastremski would get in trouble for giving him sneakers. The May 2014 McNally text reference to “not going to espn” follows his request for “new kicks,” and was Mr. McNally’s way of saying, in substance: “Hey, don’t worry about whether giving me those sneakers will get you in trouble — I’ll never tell.” The Wells investigators had this text long before their interviews with Mr. McNally and Mr. Jastremski. Had they asked Mr. McNally or Mr. Jastremski about this text when they interviewed each for a full day using four lawyers, they would have learned this.

It being a reference to Mr. Brady is also inconsistent with Mr. Brady’s expressed testimony that he never had any reason to — or did — express concern over any “stress” Mr. McNally had. Mr. Jastremski frequently sent texts which did not relate to either a prior text that he sent or the prior text that he received — the investigators have extensive texts from him to various people on numerous subjects and this pattern was apparent. Numerous examples were called to their attention. This pattern of Mr. Jastremski’s texting is disregarded in the report.

The “him” and “he” was in fact Mr. Jastremski’s friend, as the investigators were told, and the conversation involved issues relating to Mr. McNally’s stress relating to reselling family tickets.

He could use the word deflate in regards to weight in one instance and then refer to himself as the deflator because he deflates footballs for Brady in another instance. They aren't mutually exclusive. I believe the latter is true because of three reasons. 1)McNally on multiple occasion text JJ about his effect on the inflation rate and size of the gameday footballs and relationship between the gear that JJ is getting him. 2)McNully reference multiple times how his effect on the inflation rate of the football will directly impact Tom Brady's performance. 3)McNully has zero job responsibilities that have him handling, inflating, or deflating footballs. I could care less if he used the term deflate to relate to weight some other random time in a text message to JJ.

Patriots Rebuttal

First, the report ignores the information the investigators gathered that Mr. Jastremski’s duties in football preparation in fact routinely involve deflating every football at least twice. Every team in the League has developed a standard operating procedure for the preparation of new footballs for game play. The Patriots standard procedures are described in part on pgs. 37-40. Omitted from that description, but as Mr. Jastremski explained, is that the very first thing he routinely does when he opens a new box of Wilson footballs is to take a bit of air out of them. That makes them easier to prepare. The second time he takes air out of footballs is when he sets them for Mr. Brady’s pre-game review and selection. (pgs. 39-40)

The text messages are already explained to be taken out of context in the Wells Report, with the full context show in the section I linked above on the Pats rebuttal page.

JJ's job responsibilities include deflate the balls - twice - and has acknowledged that McNally helps him. McNally's job might not officially have anything to do with deflation, but that's what he helped JJ with.
