Socialism, a political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole, and/or (in Marxist theory) a transitional social state between the overthrow of capitalism and the realization of communism.

Public roads occurred under capitalism as well so they must not be unique to whatever you're thinking socialism is. There is no requirement under socialism to build public roads, it's just in the best interest of the state to have ease of transportation regardless of its economic theory.

When I say socialism, I'm referring to the above definition, which is why I list crappy countries that tried it. When governments seize the means of production (or outlaw private property) they tend to turn into hell holes. There's a large lift of African and South American countries that tried it out, and it didn't go over so well. The Soviet Union didn't fall apart because they were doing so just too well economically. North Korea isn't a piece of crap because they're the bastion of freedoms and civil rights.

You know one thing that is unique to socialism? Everyone trying to escape it except the evil cabal running it. People weren't getting shot trying to climb the Berlin Wall to escape the decadent pleasures of the socialist paradise. North Korean defectors aren't fleeing because they hate all the universal healthcare.

You're thinking that because a government builds roads or have healthcare that it somehow makes it socialist, it isn't. The idea of governments from absolute monarchies to free states throughout history always have some basic form of social welfare for the citizens. You simply have to or you're overthrown if you just use the army to steal everything and give nothing back.

Social programs, and governments using tax money to offer services to the citizens aren't socialist. It's just national policy of every government.
