Solo female travelers of Reddit, what tips, advice, or warnings do you have for females traveling alone for the first time?

  • Have printed copies of your passport ready

  • When leaving the room, hide your passport and other valuables and do not leave in plain sight.

  • Split up your money, make sure to keep it well hidden also. Always have enough change on me to make sure I am able to go back to my hotel with public transport.

  • Always know how to go to and from places using public transport, don't just rely on Google Maps, Uber or taxis to show you the way.

  • Try to know the cost of essentials beforehand (for example, cost of buying a sim card with credit or cost of taxi from the hotel).

  • Make sure someone else knows your itinerary including dates of departure and arrival, also update your bank and local travel advisory of countries you intend to visit and use your bank card.

  • Use an RFID blocking wallet or case for your cards.

  • Blend in as much as possible - ie if you can, use a normal bag instead of carry on, wear comfortable clothing, don't have a camera hanging from your shoulder, etc.

  • Allude that you have people expecting you or with you - for example, meeting with coworkers and you're on a business trip, meeting friends, seeing family etc (this is always the case, especially with flatmate/family expecting me).

  • Make sure to back up important data from your phone and laptop on the event of being pickpocketed or robbed (even better - have a secondary phone or even laptop for travel)
