Thread about residents looking patients up online. Thoughts from other medical professionals ?

The "oh well its online so its okay" excuse is a terrible one. Yes legally you are correct, but privacy and trust are foremost ethical issues.

If you feel so confident that knowing your patient's name automatically gives you consent to search for them online would you be willing to post your name right now? After all, the worst I can find would be public information.

1) Just because a patient comes in to see you does not give you to right to invade their privacy

2) We don't always have the power to control what information is available about us online. Google is notorious for storing personal information even if you request for websites to take it down.
