Listerine, which is sold in a number of countries worldwide, contains 26.9% alcohol, making it more potent than beer, wine and some liquors. Because of the high alcohol content, it is not uncommon for addicts to consume large quantities when regular alcoholic beverages are difficult to find. I just called Poison Control to confirm this, and they confirmed the only reason Listerine has a poison control label is because of the Ethanol, which is the same alcohol found in beer. While Listerine has chemicals added so it can be considered denatured alcohol, none of the added ingredients are poisonous in the doses in the Listerine. Drinking Original Listerine will taste horrible, and has a strong medicinal taste, but it is 54 proof liquor, while vodka is 80 proof. It is 5 times stronger than most beers, and 2 times stronger than most wines. You also don't need ID to buy it. Here are the ingredients in Original Listerine: Eucalyptol 0.092% Menthol 0.042% Methyl salicylate 0.060% Thymol 0.064% Water alcohol (26.9%) benzoic acid poloxamer 407 sodium benzoate caramel The only other potentially concerning chemical is Methyl salicylate, but it's not toxic at the doses in Listerine. While these extra ingredients taste horrible, there is nothing poisonous added to Listerine like rubbing or wood alcohol. And I can confirm that it can get u drunk cause in the past I have done it.
