Travis County COVID-19 confirmed cases have risen to 3,272. Death count has remained the same at 93. Here is a visualization of what we know so far. (OC - Updated 05/31)

Thanks for continuing to inform us.

Keeping a close eye on these numbers, because I'm struggling with what to do for my child's education in the new school year. Her small private elementary school is expensive. In-person classes are great. We really like the school. The online efforts, not so great in spite of best efforts. Online-only is not worth 5 figures / year to us. I work part-time from home, so home-schooling (as we're doing this summer) is a practical option.

I have two pre-existing health conditions that make me vulnerable to covid-19, in addition to not being young (50-ish). Similar for my wife. Also, our health insurance stinks, so getting sick is scary from a financial perspective, not just a dying perspective. We have been ultra-cautious in preventing exposure for 3+ months now. Which would be all for naught if she goes back to school and brings it home from there.

I alternate between:

  1. infection rates are not terrible here, I'd probably be ok anyways even if I got sick (maybe I have like a 1% chance of death based on my risk factors?), and she is really missing her friends, so we should get her back into school
  2. the health risk is not worth it, tuition is like burning a pile of money if fall/winter classes end up being online-only (TBD), and we are doing ok with home schooling

Also, it's all a moot point if not enough parents sign up and the school goes out of business, which would be heartbreaking.

Anyone in a similar situation? Thoughts? Sorry if this is off-topic. I'm not sure what subreddit would be better for advice on this.
