Veto Blues

I'm probably going to get downvoted for this, but that's ok. I have never been in a poly relationship before, and am still in the middle of reading the relevant literature and figuring out if this is for me.

Why do people even give others veto power to begin with? Just from reading this thread, it feels like it can only ever go bad. I feel like this lifestyle is supposed to be empowering, and giving someone else veto power so that they can feel better about things feels like the opposite of that.

If (when?) I find a long-term partner who is interested in poly, if the idea of veto is brought up, I'm just going to say no. You can either own your feelings and get them in check, or this isn't for you.

Can someone explain?
