What common product has a feature you’re not sure everyone is aware of?

This depends on (but not limited to)

  • The mastering target of the version of the song you are listening to is (CDs are mastered differently to radio, streaming services, vinyl, etc)
  • The linearity of any amplifier stages your device has
  • The linearity of the drivers in your speakers / headphones / whatever
  • The acoustic design of the enclosure the speakers / headphones are situated in
  • The acoustic properties of the listening space volume
  • Your hearing (get an audiologist to do a plot of your sound sensitivity, there are ways of doing it at home too if you have the right gear)
  • The resonances of surrounding items such as furniture, windows, walls, etc

To do it right: get a proper measurement mic (like a Behringer ECM8000) and some spectrum analysis software like REQW and generate a parametric equaliser specification based on pink noise and sweeps.
