That she has never given up on my brother, ever

Super nice great guy, was living abroad, it wasn't working out, he couldn't get work, he'd always smoked weed, since about 13, but he started smoking from morning to night, went very downhill. Developed a bad paranoia, would never leave the house, barely ate anything, lost all his friends, except for his girlfriend who just didn't seemed concerned about it. They'd leave food rotting on plates in the kitchen.. my mother would tirelessly fly over, clean the house, fill the fridge with food, buy them a freezer, cook and freeze hundreds of meals.. and repeat this. Yes with hindsight I look back now and I think we should have just let him starve, get the authorities involved.. but to see someone in your family in that state, your instinct is always to try and help them, and we didn't know then what we know now

Finally he started to eat again.. and that's when it got a thousand times worse, he was so wrapped up in self loathing, blaming the world, in complete denial, utterly reliant on cannabis, incapable of leaving the house.. and relentlessly blaming my mother for all his problems.. he poured all his frustration, anger and bitterness into her

And she never once gave up, 10 years on, and she is still going, making sure he has food, making sure he goes to psychiatrists and psychologists (they can't do anything about him). As a family we haven't given up, but only because she's kept us going, as long as she has breath in her body I know she'll never give up
