What's so good about iTunes cards?

The other day I was emailing with someone I had met from Craigslist. I had been aiming for a romantic conversation and had posted an advertisement to that effect.

The conversation seemed to be going well. We had sent several emails back and forth between us. I suggested we meet, however, for some odd reason they asked me to buy an iTunes card to the value of $100 and take a photo of it. Then I should post it to them. This actually became a condition of whether I met with that person or not. I refused, and that person then refused to meet. Their email communication ceased, and I knew that this was a scam.

But then this happened again with another person. Again I refused and again all communication ceased - except before it did, I was severely berated by the person who insisted that if I was not willing to provide them with what they asked for, how did I think I would be a good partner?

To me, this is entirely bizarre behaviour. I get that it's a romance scam, but what I don't understand is what is so valuable about iTunes cards. you buy music with them, and I don't know what else they could be good for.

Does anybody know about this?
