What's a harsh truth that Kiwis refuse to accept?

It is funny how NZ is a country full of immigrants and yet we can't seem to understand as a society how good we really have it. Just from memory:

My Filipina friend can't speak english in public when she's visiting family in Manila, because it would single her out and make her a kidnapping target.

I was childhood friends with two white Zimbabwean boys whose grandparents were murdered in the Bush War.

I dated an Indian guy who told me his great-uncle was a member of the Punjabi secessionist movement, who was eventually burned alive by the army in front of his whole village.

I work with a guy from Cape Town who moved his family over here after a gang stabbed a man to death right outside his parents house.

Fred Dagg was 100% right, we really don't know how lucky we are.
