[WP] You are what you smell

It was a dark day when the curse first took effect. Suddenly, people would be transformed in the blink of an eye, taking on the approximate form of whatever they happened to be smelling at that particular moment. Going to the bathroom became a living hell, as people would take on the appearance of their own excrement. Restaurants became absurd, if not altogether disturbing, as large piles of assorted foods made conversation, and ate from plates containing smaller, more pleasantly organized versions of themselves. Regrettably, a few people tried to prevent themselves from smelling anything at all. Those who were successful disappeared entirely, contributing to the widespread grief and panic shared by everyone. Eventually however, society adjusted. Perfume companies adapted to the change, and began designing and selling personal fragrances based not on the appeal of the odor itself, but rather what form it would cause you to assume. They came in the form of gels or lotions, and people would smear it under their noses throughout the day, allowing for relative consistency of shape. In the end, some have come to regard the phenomenon as a gift or blessing to mankind. Fragrances derived from the body odor of models and other attractive celebrities improved the lives of many, and the sheer difficulty of living and working alongside people who change shape at random has made basic fragrances highly available and affordable to most, at least in the more developed countries. Most of us wish we could return to the way things were but it seems our new painfully absurd way of life is here to stay, so regardless we will have to make do. If only we had learned to appreciate our existence before the world stopped making sense.
