$30 'Safer Families Levy' just arrived with with my rates. Is this fair?

I don't understand the hate that the OP is getting. OP isn't saying there shouldn't be funding for DV, only objecting to the Levy.

some valid points: why should homeowners be the only ones to chip in? is this not an issue that benefits all and to which all should contribute?

Secondly, why a levy? levies are the gov'ts way to raise taxes without copping a beating in the polls. They do this when they have bulletproof issues such as DV or the QLD floods--nobody is going to say that these issues shouldn't be supported. Yet why should these be funded through levies rather than through regular budgets? If they need to raise taxes (or rates) to do so, fine. But I wonder if there really aren't places to save money in the regular budget if the gov't truly sees DV as a critical issue. We could start with Barr's newly created and wholly political appointment of a prominent liberal polly to international relations ambassador or whatever the made up job is.

There is plenty of corruption and pork barrelling that could be toned down to pay for things that matter in this city. but it's a lot easier to just issue a levy instead.
