85K Salary Enough to Live in Bay Area?

I think it was around $3k/month when we first moved in a few years ago. Our rent would only go up by about $50/month each year we lived there. (Unlike at our old complex, where our tiny one bedroom steadily went up by $200/month for a couple years, at which point we realized we could get a two bedroom for almost the same price.) I kind of suspect having a winter renewal right after the holidays helped keep our rent lower, or it could have just been a coincidence.

It was considered "luxury" because it's rare to find something in that price range or above that's not, probably because you're paying such an inflated price to live in the area, and psychologically it makes you feel better.
