Am I still getting better if I never roll with people worse than me?

Small chunk your game. Think little victories. (the tap is not the goal) When I started rolling, I was one of the smallest guys in the room, so I was constantly being put on my back. However, my guard game (and bottom escape game for that matter) because very strong. At that point, it was a lot easier to work my top game because I had no fear of being swept or put on my back--that was default, I didn't mind being there anymore. Developing your back game will help you build confidence so you can advance your top game. Small chunk it. This next roll, I'm going to simply hold him in my guard and not let him pass. I'm not looking for submissions, I just don't want him to break my guard (control his posture, prevent his hands from getting to your hips, etc).
Then, in another roll, work your guard retention. All I care about is getting my half/full guard back. I don't care if he taps me 10 times. I just want to try and get my guard back. Next roll, all I want is the arm drag from full guard. Just get control of the wrist and elbow, and pass his arm across my body. Once you get it... let it go & do it again. You're not looking for the back, you're not setting up the arm bar... you're just hitting the arm drag. (however, once you're good at that arm drag, the next chunk WILL BE the arm bar or the back take or the whatever you like). Little victories. This will also help remove a lot of ego. I can't tap every guy I roll against, but I'm pretty sure I can get my guard back, or hit an X-pass, or hold side control for a solid 20 seconds, etc. Don't use submissions as your only measuring stick.

This is the exact same philosophy I'd use against guys who AREN'T as good as me too. Pick a small goal and achieve it over and over again.

Don't think just because you aren't able to tap dudes in your gym that you're not going to be able to learn/advance.

A while back, I saw a video on YouTube of "S Training" (something John Danaher & Shawn Williams pioneered). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4i0tTHdLuwA Great way to hone your game. Try to get some of the higher belts to do this style of flow rolling with you.
