The problem they're trying to solve is that guns are legal. Everything is a step towards removing that problem. Fortunately this has come out more recently as the stated goal of many anti-gun crusaders and has actually shown the "you're just paranoid" types to be actually correct.

Beto: Hell yeah we're coming for your guns!

Biden: Hell yeah if you own an assault weapon I'm coming for them!

Parkland Students: When they give an inch, we'll take a mile!

Feinstein: Mr. and Mrs. America, turn them all in(referencing assault weapons)!

They've been saying it for years subtly, but seem to have dropped the subtly at this point.

Anyone who believes the current crop of the left just want a "few reasonable gun laws" literally hasn't been paying attention to anything they've been saying over the past 5-10 years.

I used to be in that group; they don't want to take your guns. Well to paraphrase Maury "we determined that was a lie".

It sounds hyperbolic on its face, but once you dig into the actual positions and what has been said when they thought they were among enough like-minded people their actual goals come out.
