We live in troubling times. The dystopian nightmare that is China (specifically the Chinese Communist Party) is on the rise. If the western world cannot produce and effective counterbalance ideas like self-determination and free speech will be relegated to the ash heap of history.

Nah, you guys aren't even likely to get the relative stability of an authoritarian regime. Just massive and pointless infighting while everything crumble without an effective strategy. Batches and batches of newly elected leaders promising the moon just to get elected while realistically unable to do anything even if they wanted to due to massive systematic inertia.

An actual authoritarian regime requires an actual bare minimum of competency and the power to maintain a somewhat stable social state which means I'm pretty sure you will keep your precious self-determination and free speech to the very end.
