Colorado school booted teacher for opposing ‘Jesus pizza’ Bible studies during lunch: lawsuit - "... a Colorado teacher claims that officials at Florence High School are using their facility to promote evangelical Christianity in violation of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution."

The only way in hell I would support vouchers as a tax paying, property owner with zero fuck trophies is if I also got my taxes back to. As a business owner I have an interest in making sure that my future employees have the skills that I need to continue to grow my company. As a citizen I have an interest in having a highly educated public as it increases the quality of life for everyone. I can insure that my taxes are being invested wisely by participating in local and state school boards. Once my taxes, in the form of vouchers, are handed over to a private institution I no longer can insure they are being invested wisely. The private school doesn't care that I need workers that are very proficient in math, they just care what the parents that spent my tax dollars want. If those parents just want there kids to learn that Jesus rode dinosaurs and they never get past basic arithmetic, it screws me over.

Also once you start opening ways for private institutions to get that government money. You will eventually end up with for profit McSchools popping up everywhere, look at the for profit colleges for an example of this. Then the state would have to respond by creating a new bureaucracy or expanding one that already exists to insure that these private schools are meeting some minimum standard.

It will create an even bigger divide between schools in affluent areas vs poor areas. The McSchools will pop up more in the poor areas. As the McSchools pop up, the marketers will come telling parents that they should get the voucher and send their kids to the prestigious McAcademy because its better than public school. As parents jump at this, it only pulls more and more funding from public schools only making them worse. The McSchools will be operated by some faceless corporation that truly doesn't give a single shit about the students and will make people dream of public schools of the past. I just see it as another race to the bottom as the corporations spend the bare minimum on the students so they can pocket the rest.

Then there is how if you give a fundamentalists an inch they will take it a mile and try and go another 99 miles with it. Don't be surprised after the voucher program is setup that only Christian schools are approved. Just look at the state rep in Louisiana, that said she wouldn't have voted for their state's voucher program if she knew Muslim schools would qualify for the program during a session on the legislative floor.

Lastly, these private schools can be selective in admitting what students they want and eventually public schools will just be full of students whose parents don't care about them and the mentally/learning/physically handicapped. This will make it look like public schools are an obvious failure compared to private ones and be used to justify getting rid of them completely. The McSchools might pick the handicapped students if they can receive a lot more money to make it profitable. Also if they don't have to include them with the rest of the student population so that any numbers they report aren't driven down by them which makes the school less marketable.
