Delta, I know the bad weather that caused my flight delay isn't your fault, but you could have still invited me to the barbecue...

There's so much safety training at airlines

Yeah....not really. I used to work for Delta Airlines as a ramp rat, just like these dudes.

Our "safety training" consisted of having to take a test on a computer once a year. This "test" consisted of watching about 5 hours of cartoony power point presentations, and then taking a brief multiple choice quiz after each section.

We used to really look forward to test day, because since it was supposed to take like 5 hours to complete, so they'd schedule it at the end of your shift...so if you finished early you'd get to sneak out and go home. Fortunately for us, anyone with half a brain quickly figured out how to trick the program and skip over all of the borin videos, and get straight to the quizes...so you could complete your yearly training program in like 45 minutes. The quizes were incredibly easy, and even if you missed every question, it you let you take it over and over. So literally a monkey just hitting keys could eventually pass the safety training.

And that's it.

not just by the company but by the airport

No, not at all. I never heard of or experienced the "airport" requiring it's own independent safety training. Not when I was first hired, and certainly not periodically. We just took the hilarious quiz on the computer once a year, given by Delta, who then in turn just reported us to the airport as compliant (I presume).

And this wasn't at some backwoods podunk airport like Akron or Mobile...this was at Hartsfield Atlanta.

by the airport and fire marshal that this doesn't happen without proper planning and notification

Yeah, I'm not so sure. I never was a manager or helped throw these little barbecues together, so I can't say for sure, but I seriously doubt that the fire marshal is involved in the planning or is notified of each barbecue.

In over a decade of working on the ramp, I never saw an actual fire marshal, and the only time I heard one mentioned was every once in awhile if someone reported an extreme amount of cigarette butts someplace on the ramp, we'd get a warning and be careful where we smoked....for about a week.

The designated smoking spots in many areas were literally half as close to the airplanes as the grill is in the picture... and half the time we didn't even use those, we smoked where we wanted.

Maybe things are different now...but I doubt it. This was only a few years back.
