[Discussion] [Method] Change by the bundle: Study shows people are capable of multiple, simultaneous life changes

Sounds like red pill's monk mode. I think I've done similar bundle changes but as discipline wanes it all crashes together. I'd love to see a follow up study with 6/12/24 month checkups. It was a study, so the volunteers were probably paid a bit, they signed forms committing to the study, their persistence at the tasks provided for them was expected and agreed upon and the tasks - yoga/pilates/meditation/lifestyle talks - sound pretty rad themselves.

In the study, 31 college students were recruited for an intensive lifestyle change program; 15 participated in the intervention and 16 were in the waitlist control group. Those in the intervention put in five hours a day each weekday for six weeks. They did 2.5 hours of physical exercise (including yoga and Pilates), one hour of mindfulness practice and 1.5 hours of lecture or discussion on topics such as sleep, nutrition, exercise, mindfulness, compassion, relationships or well being. The were advised to limit alcohol consumption to one drink a day, eat a diet of mostly whole foods and sleep 8-10 hours a day.

I think discipline is easier when people are provided with a structure. Look at the armed services. Boot camp, from what movies have taught me, teaches the enlisted discipline among other useful service protocol, eg., weapons, command, tactics, personal training.

When on a meditaiton retreat, someone is ringing a gong at 4am to get people up and meditating. They'll come and pester you about it if you don't get up. I've heard of Tibetan Lamas being more aggressive (wrathful) about getting people into the meditation hall because they see it as the compassionate thing to do.

What I'm saying, is that it would seem that provided structure and enforcement make developing discipline easier. Get up and meditate/jog/diet/whatev's is easier when there is someone there to get you up.

As adults we need to be our own Master, but having someone else handle it makes things seem easier, at least to me.
