Don't use meditation as an escape from dealing with things in real life

I have always felt that way about monks who simply run away from real life and go live in a mountain. Just to be clear, I'm not against any religion. People from all religious and spiritual backgrounds have done this. But I'll use the example of buddhism because that's what most people first think of when they hear the word 'meditation'. Gautama Buddha was a prince who had a good life but abandoned his family and his kingdom because he couldn't deal with all the suffering that life entails - he just ran away from his kingdom because he couldn't deal with his existential crisis.
