A possibility that had occurred to me: (not saying I believe this, but it had occurred to me)

If I was a globalist that wanted to break up the United States into manageable pieces, I'd start with a controlled opposition candidate (someone like Trump) that can get the nationalists all riled up for a few years, and then have that controlled opposition candidate throw the re-election, so as to further damage people's belief in the American political system. Bonus points if he appointed Supreme Court justices that can get the OTHER group of people also riled up.

You can't create a new globalist system for the US, without destroying the old one first.
