and white people are 'the other' to these groups as well. There is always an "other". The truth is that we aren't all the same, we have different genders, ethnicities, religions, styles of dress, methods of self-expression, etc.

Trying to escape the other only further divides people based on whether they adhere to this theory that white people are 'them' and your minority group is 'us' or not.

I'm white. I'm transgender. I'm middle-class. I can put myself in as many nice labeled little boxes as I want, but I don't, i'm just me, and the less we label things to put them in nice little boxes the better, in my opinion. Just because you are a person of colour or black or trans or gay doesn't mean you are the same as every other person of colour, black person, trans-* person, etc.

There is no 'us' and 'them' in society, there is only "us". And while everyone constantly cries foul because their box isn't as well-represented as someone else's box, little is ever done to effect the necessary change.

We need to get out of our boxes and join together, instead of blaming the other boxes for your box's difficulties.
