How to actually keep employees around

Someone I know had a baby that died a few days after being born. They had to return to work after planning on taking maternity leave and people either knew or were confused and understandably asked her why she was back so soon. Having to tell your coworkers something so personal and devastating was brutal for her. She said there were so many ways people reacted and it made her realize who her true friends were. Some people just can't handle it and back away or never mention it again which is understandable but some people just stop talking to you.

I think it's different for everyone what the right answer is to this but she said the nicest thing someone did is when they found out they wrote a 2 page letter basically saying how much they supported and cared for her and her husband and how they didn't know how they were feeling but that it must be very difficult. The person also wrote a bit about how if they were any indication of the person the kid would have been if they grew up the
