The old esport genres (AFPS and RTS) dont offer any time to relax - except by not playing the game. I still remember the queue anxiety threads during SC2 launch. There were no good custom games yet and all you could do was to queue up or grind the AI. MOBAs offer laning phase and technically a lot of what you could call solo or PvE time. It's also more likely to win a game or match in teamgames even though you didn't perform too well. In Quake and StarCraft it will always be your fault alone for not playing better.

Toxicity is something that often arises from losing without the looser feeling being at fault. But this toxicity leads to "hating" others while not feeling bad about yourself. This kind of toxicity won't really lead you nowhere in terms of self-improvement but it allows you to swallow losses easier.

It's probably an overstatement to say that the attitude with which the average player approaches online games has changed but that's how I feel. The RTS and aFPS genre lost momentum and size relative to the new giants because the new esport giants base their size on a more casual playerbase. Casuals bring money and money attracts the competitve scene.

At the same time it's a good sign that e.g. fighting games are slowly growing again. The overall playerbase for online games has grown significantly, so even if the share of heavily competitve players is lower today the absolute number has probably increased by a good amount which makes games like Diabotical with state-of-the-art polish more likely to attract a critical mass of players to sustain themselves.
