The idea that “no one owes you anything” to explain away bad behavior is nothing but a copout for people who treat you like shit.

I have a mild speech delay, it's 3 seconds at most to start a sentence and then I speak pretty much normally. Once I was sharing a taxi with some other people and the driver asked everyone where they were going. I was first and said "well I live right here, if you go down this street-" and then a woman in the front scoffed and said "she doesn't know where she lives, idiot"

She looked back at me like I was a piece of meat, and started talking about me again to the driver "yeah it sounds like she doesn't know where she lives, she sounds so dumb. Ugh wasting every one's time" and then they laughed together like I was 10 ft away.

She did NOT look tired or annoyed she looked absolutely invigorated. The people in the car didn't even care (one guy nodded) and the driver enjoyed it.

Then when I got home I told my uncle what happened and he said "well you can't expect everyone to be nice to you. The people in the car were probably tired and wanted you to hurry up...but again they were not tired, it does not save time to pick on someone? It was cruel

I remember thinking, I don't want that to ever happen again...I don't even want politeness, I just don't want to be bullied by a stranger. I wanted to be left alone. That was respect to me...although you could say tolerance is a better word. They could have just...let me speak and I would have been gone.

Alot of people don't understand how to be respectful of a stranger because they don't have empathy and see others as objects. They can't help but feel aggravation when seeing someone weak or abnormal.
