Businesses should absolutely have substantial rainy-day funds. And they should be allowed to twist in the wind when something happens. And they should be above water enough to run at half- or quarter-capacity for a while without their assets being seized for failure to pay debts.
The whole country, companies and individuals, has been abusing credit for two or three generations, and we need to straighten it out. It makes ALL economic trouble much worse. It keeps the price of capital, especially real estate, high. It helps people ignore the price of consumer goods that are too expensive. It stresses all of us right the fuck out, enough that I wouldn't be surprised if it steals a year of life from each of us. This shit has to stop.
