I work in a JDC with the wing that handles the mentally ill side of the EJJ kids. They're actually far more dangerous and unpredictable than the straight forward gang-banger EJJ kids. We go through so many college grad staff that come in wanting to change lives but can't handle the batshit crazy things that happen. Many have quit after their first shift and were dealing with TEENAGERS. I've seen staff get broken bones, stabbed with shanks, choked out, jumped, thrown down stairs, and concussed. I've worked at this place for EIGHT MONTHS... There's no easy fix to situations like this and sending in untrained people in regard to restraints, hand to hand defense, or serious defensive equipment would get real ugly, real fast. Officers need more deescalation training for sure but there's no magic bullet here
