Let's Talk: Rise if Indie, Decline of Rock

Maybe rock music is dead. Maybe it isn't. I don't give a shit.

Well I do. It meant something to me.

There are plenty of styles of music that aren't stuck in a self-referential, ironic phase.

and they might be great, might have great musicians, and i might like/love them. but it's still not rock and missing what i relate to more often than not, at my core.

If i had to be trapped on an island and only allowed to take 10 albums with me. It's not that i don't love bjork or tom waits or animal collective. It's not that i don't love run the jewels or my bloody valentine. if it doesn't have oomph and brains in equal measure, if rebellion and subversiveness isnt at the art of it, if it wasn't made by instrumentalists playing off each other and sometimes showing their chops... it wouldn't make that top 10 i'd have to hear forever. i promise you.

t's just a genre that's near the end of its lifespan

kinda the point of my whole thread.

Back when it was the dominant form of western music, classical concerts were a lot like rock concerts.

people try to act like classical was the only thing that existed "back then". it wasn't. even 1800s. there was various folks/roots music that commoners played. it just wasn't recorded and there was no "popular culture".

People cheered, talked in the middle of the performances

Yeah. The millenials just moved this behavior into the movie theater.

People don't make noise at classical concerts because classical music is no longer a major part of our cultur

more like that people who go now aren't going to see and be seen, but rather going to appreciate the music. but you're comparing apples and oranges to a rock show.

Rock was always a mix of - as i've said - a bit of a party, and a bit of musical showmanship/party. some more than the other.

Hip Hop, on the other hand, is still rebellious and is still a dominant style of music in our culture, and so its concerts are a different story.

yes, because for all the progress we've made in society in regards to race - somehow it's still ok to exploit blacks as sexual, dangerous, rebellious and cooler than everyone else.
