Lewis Goodall: If a Labour government said it would spend “whatever it takes” to eradicate inequality it would be told by Conservatives it was reckless, uptopian and unrealistic. Why is this different?

There are lots of criticisms that could and should be levied against the Tories re. their no-deal planning and economic management, but this is the wrong line of attack; spending money to prop up the nation's economy is not equivalent to spending money to tackle a social agenda.

That said, the sad thing is that politics in this country has become so tribal and intellectual discussions so hysterical, that it doesn't even matter; if this was a solid argument, those on the right would disregard it, and even if it wasn't, those on the left would bleat it. We live in a world where people only care about what reinforces what they already think, no matter how tenuous, and everything else is fake news.
