McDonald's menu during 1973.

That depends, do you mean within the cheeseburger-to-dollar economic system established in my earlier response or in direct reference to each other?

Economically, I value a muffin at $1 as well, as that's roughly the cost of the absolutely delicious convenience store muffins I typically purchase for my muffin consumption needs.

Now a muffin compared to a cheeseburger in direct comparison is a much more complex matter. This actually varies wildly based on the time of day and what I am currently craving.

Essentially my food cravings can boil down to two different categories: I either want sugar or meat.

The value of each item is pretty much equal to the amount of craving I have for it at the time. Therefore, what we really need to figure out is which item I'd be craving for.

My craving for A should be calculated by the amount of time since I've last consumed A while also taking into account the ratio of A to B I've consumed within the last fortnight.

For example, if I've consumed 1 muffin five minutes ago, but only 2 muffins over the course of the last fortnight while I've consumed 25 cheeseburgers then by probability I would very lightly highly value a muffin over a cheeseburger, even though I've consumed a muffin more recently.

The biggest hurtle here is defining a unit of 'craving'. As far as I know no such unit exists, but I think that most useful would be a scale of craving rather than a unit.

This might work:

(1 + ( HslM / 336)) * ( NofCH / ( NofM + NofCH )) Where: hslM = Hours since last Muffin NofCH = Number of cheeseburgers consumed within the last fortnight NofM = Number of Muffins consumed within the last fortnight.

The formula would be ran twice - the first time as above and then a second switching the places of muffins and cheeseburgers.

The scale would be a relative scale and not an absolute one - the value for a muffin would be useless without the value of a cheeseburger, but comparing them to each other you should be able to find out just how much more I want a cheeseburger than a muffin at the current time.

Tempted to try this out now...
