Nintendo cancels stream of their Splatoon NA open; fans speculate this is in retaliation to #FreeMelee trending

Square Enix can be the same way. When building FFXIV, nobody on the team had even experienced World of Warcraft. There's a weird hubris about reinventing the wheel and not feeling like fan expectations/feedback is even relevant.

Even though FFXIV has new leadership and understands the need to listen to fans. There's still a lot of times where questionable content comes out and the devs just can't accept that it isn't well liked. There's this philosophy of "we can make you like this, we just need to put important stuff to grind behind it and tweak it until you cave". This actually ends up working and sooner or later people flip and call it innovative.

Like you say, I think it's a cultural thing where some companies just think they are the pioneers of game creation who can't do wrong, and that Western culture just copies and has no great ideas.
