Japan was definitely the most technologically advanced and far ahead of any other country during that time. That stereotype for Japan didn't come out of thin air. I mean just look at this short clip about cars and compare that to any other country during that time and you'll see why a lot of people still hold onto that outdated image of Japan.

If you go on Youtube and look at a bunch of clips from Japan during the 80s and 90s, literally nothing has changed at all from current day Japan besides more modern looking cars and digital LED billboards on buildings.
