As a post-college adult, have you ever actually followed an impulsive instinct to uproot and do something completely fun/random/impractical in another country for a while? What was it like?

Yes! I lived in New York for 1.5 years after graduation and then dropped everything and moved to Indonesia to pursue an artist residency. I was 23. It was completely impractical and definitely kind of crazy.

How did you find your hobby/activity/work abroad?

I had spent about a year putting together a grant proposal to study in Jakarta. The funding didn't come through, but I had savings from work and decided to go anyway. I was obsessed with the idea of this trip. The artist residency was cool, but it was also the fact that part of my family was originally from Indonesia. Before I left, I thought it would help me figure out some stuff about our family tree.

How long did you stay?

6 months.

How was your experience?

Absolutely amazing. It didn't end up being about the art at all. I saw some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, traveled throughout Asia (which I'd never been to before), experienced living in a predominantly Muslim country, learned a lot about wealth and inequality, and was able to connect with previously unknown branches of my family tree. In the process, it completely wiped out my savings (I've since built them back up) - but I will never regret going, not for one minute.

If you're young and relatively unattached - go. I highly recommend it.
