There are some small towns where we pick up cars, and we have no choice but to block the crossing while adding them to the train. Then we have to air test them. It looks like we are just sitting there trying to ruin people's day, especially when we pull forward just enough to allllllllllmost clear the crossing, then back up again. It's gotta piss people off so bad, but if we kept clearing the crossing and letting traffic go, we would never get the work done! :/ It sucks so bad though. We've had angry drivers get out and try and fight conductors. Ugh. Terrible.

No seatbelts... Yet. Most the time you're just sitting back in the big chair hitting the horn button. If the windows are open, you just have safety goggles and eat plugs on. If you leave the cab, a yellow safety vest. But no seatbelts. It's likely because THE ONE RULE that there railroad doesn't have is whether or not to jump in the event of an impending collision. They leave that up to your discretion.

They say, over 20mph and you're going to break your legs. I know people who have jumped and luckily got caught in a tree that somehow broke their fall. But they prolly don't want you bring hindered if you have to make that decision.

One of the worst feelings in the world is approaching a siding, and having signals to go into the siding, and seeing another train still moving coming up to his signal to stop before the siding, and wondering if he's paying attention and is going to stop. This video shows how it happens perfectly.

As he approaches the siding, you see he has signals to go into the siding. (Red over Green). Railroad signals are opposite from highway traffic signals. On the highway, top to bottom is Red, Yellow, Green. On the rails, it's opposite. It's LEAST restrictive on top (usually a Green light), Yellow, Lunar (Lunar is a white light, but often there's no Lunar), then most restrictive (Red) on bottom. You can see it's the bottom bulb on the primary signal (lowest light on the top signal is red... It's a stop signal, telling him movement on the main track will stop) and the top bulb (green) on the secondary, or the bottom signal head (tells him movement will continue on the diverging route). If you notice at 40secs, the signal head on bottom "drops" to all red (bottom bulb) because the other train ran his red signal. But there's no time to stop. Just gotta decide real quick whether or not to jump. Terrifying.
