Left a comedy show with my girlfriend in Westport (suburb of Kansas City). Was a good time, had some amazing beers brewed in house. Got shift aced for the show then sobered up as best as I could before we head home. About to turn left out of the parking lot when someone coming slows down to let me through. I begin to turn but am cut off by a pedestrian. That was irritating.

After they cross I turn onto the road and get to the stop sign when I hear what sounded like fireworks. I look to my left and across the street a black dude in a white t-shirt is firing a pistol (exactly where I would have been had I not been stopped by the pedestrian) across the street at another black dude (also in white) who's returning fire.

It took a minute to register what I was seeing but then my girlfriend shouts "What do we do!?" and I snap out of it and tell her to get down. We're crouched under the dash and hear about 6 shots go off. A few seconds of quiet and I peek up to see one of the guys struggling to run away (looked like he got hit or grazed by a bullet and adrenaline pushed him to get the fuck out of there). The other guy fires two more shots and I see one hit the passenger side of a car that stopped to gawk like a deer in headlights. Not sure if someone was sitting shotgun but the car speeds off and before I know it both dudes are gone and I'm getting honked at by a car behind me who missed the whole thing and thought I was just sitting there like an asshole.

The whole incident took no more than 30 seconds. I go to call the cops on my phone and immediately a patrol car speeds around the corner and high-tails it in the direction of the guy who we saw shooting first.

At this point we're just in half shock, half "that just fucking happened" and we head out of there. Never got a good look at either of the suspects.

TL;DR An asshole pedestrian darts in front of my car as I'm turning onto a street. Those few seconds I wait for him to cross may very well have saved my ass from getting shot.
