And here I am once again, choking down a shot of vodka with a big sip of OJ to chase, trying to either move forward or forget.

In story writing, a characters motivation doesn’t come from what has happened to them. Their motivation and behaviour is what story they tell themselves about what happened to them.

Say there’s two adopted children. One adopted kid thinks “i’m unlovable. the first thing that happened to me was rejection. the worlds terrible” the second adopted kid thinks “i’m so lucky. most parents get no say in what kid they have, but my new parents chose me! the worlds great!”

Your story is pretty rough. But people have come from bigger setbacks and made triumphant returns. What happens now just depends on what story you choose to tell.

Best of luck.
