A short little flight

A few things... imo there's no such thing as an over-reaction to detecting something out of the ordinary like that; you never truly know how big or small a problem actually is until you get on the ground... I would be more worried if you had decided to keep going and "wait it out", especially since it sounds like you were still so close to home.

As far as checklists... I would say it's probably better to take action right away on the items you remember; also keep in mind emergencies are almost never going to be as simple as "engine fire, step one"... there are usually one or two other elements to a situation, so that was good thinking on your part about trying to smell for electronics burning. If you are under pressure like that from focusing on flying and getting a situation under control, don't worry about adding in more distraction than necessary. Do the checklist when/if you get time.

As far as pre-flight... again most serious and not so serious things I have caught have sometimes been part of the checklist... but some times they weren't. Just gotta keep your eyes open. I am a big proponent of the 'idiot check'. After you look over everything walk about 5 - 10 feet in front of the airplane and the same thing behind and just look at the plane to make sure everything looks right.

Situations like that can be stressful, and people react differently to stress. The best thing you can do, is what you're doing now... reflect on your actions and try to better prepare yourself for the future... I bet you are never going to miss the exhaust again! For me, when I've had emergencies (or even wrecked my motorcycle highfive) I have like a frame by frame flashback with missing bits in between. Honestly I wouldn't be too hard on yourself. You handled the situation as best as you could and you got the plane (and more importantly yourself) back in one piece, and at the end of the day that's all that matters. Personally, given the same situation I can't say I would have done anything differently... in fact I've brought a plane back for less reason than that!
