Teens learning to drive and I'm very nervous!

I had a lot of anxiety about my teen driving. I think in my case, part of the reason for that anxiety was that I can't/don't drive (legally blind) and never have, so I really had no proper way to contextualize it. To me it seemed like an utterly and completely overwhelming thing to try and do (because for me it would be) and the idea of my kid learning that while in traffic, around other drivers, was kind of terrifying.

The thing that helped most was to just get in the car with them. Sure, there were a couple of scary incidents early on where they made mistakes and a couple of scary incidents where other drivers weren't paying attention (and back to back deer jumping out in front of them in the span of 5 minutes one evening), but we're a year in - no accidents, and the kiddo is turning into a very good driver.

I think all of it helped me - even seeing the scary bits and the couple of close calls - because I could see how my kid handled them and reacted to them. I got to see them progress and improve and learn to handle dangerous situations.

So I think the best thing is to just suck it up and do it.

Also, don't let your kid know you're anxious. That will just rub off and you don't want them feeling extra stressed when they're behind the wheel.

Get them into a driver's ed course if there's on in your area. They're getting surprisingly hard to find in some places. We had to travel 2hrs one way for one and our kiddo had nearly 40hrs behind the wheel by the time we were able to get in. At that point, we were basically just doing it for the insurance discount and change of perspective (different car, different adult supervising). So sign your kids up early, there may be a long waiting list.
