So a Texas Republican's argument for legalizing marijuana is that "God doesn't make mistakes".

That doesn't matter. Even if god is unbounded by time, there's a single timeline from creation to eternity. Otherwise we'd experience multiple fates and individuality would be meaningless.

The moment god creates you as son of a particular father and a particular mother, with a particular set of genes that determine your predisposition to angry behavior, drug abuse, your ease or difficulty in learning and understanding abstractions, etc, he has made a decision on what that timeline will be for you. A psycopath wouldn't make the same decisions he did if he weren't born a psycopath. A certain leader of a certain miliraty regime wouldn't be the man he was if he had been born as an indigenous woman in the middle of the Amazon forest. Joe possibly wouldn't have been shot for yelling at another guy in traffic if he hadn't learned from his role models that figthing in traffic is ok.

Just think about it. Even before god created you, he knew whether you'd be spending your eternity in heaven or hell. He knew what would cross your path, and exactly how your personality would influence this fate of yours. And it was up to him to proceed with that or make a "different you", or put you to live in a different place. Just like the fate of Adam was determined by god's decision to put a forbidden tree in the garden and let Lucifer walk by disguised as a snake.

Religious philosophy apart now.

Free will is the concept that you could make whatever choice you want. Collorary is that, if you did rewind time, you'd be able to make a different decision in the same circumstance. There's no reason to think that's true. Your decisions are based on your past experiences, what you've learned, your mood. Bob regrets shouting at his wife Alice not because he made a choice of souting at her, but because he's used to shouting at everyone and he did it before he knew it. Bob learned that from his experiences, which happened because god put him to be born in that particular town, with those particular parents, in that particular day. Rewind time and Bob will shout at Alice again.

There's absolutely no wordly reason to think we're more special than any other animal. If you wouldn't recognize free will in a chimp, there's no indication that we should find it in us.
