TIL Donnie Darko was filmed in 28 days which, coincidentally, virtually matches the time that transpired in the film. The movie took place between October 2nd, 1988 to the weekend party scene before Halloween on October 31st, 1988.

Just want to jump in and defend Richard Kelley for a second. Yes it's true that the movie was essentially saved in editing from a story telling stand point. The truth is Kelly was super young and blew people away with his script so much that they decided to let this young inexperienced kid direct the movie himself.

There are stories of him wanting all sorts of awesome camera shots that the DPs had to tell him weren't possible. He had visionary ideas but didn't have all the know how. You'll notice the long moving shot through the school in the beginning. Its a great scene and really sets the stage. It's also something only directors with chops try and pull off.

It's one of those right place, right time, voice of a generation movies that come around every so often and Kelly deserves a lot of credit for that. Donnie Darko is still a great watch all these years later. And although a Southland Tales knocked his cred down a bit, he came back with that movie The Box, which was a step back in the right direction. All that said, we shouldn't write him off as a hack. Donnie Darko is a straight up cult classic that will stand the test of time. He deserves credit for that at least.
