Is it time to put term limits on Congress?

value the experience of the incumbent ... if only the incumbent can be qualified for the job

Do you see the disconnect between "I see the value in" and "I demand we enforce this value on everyone everywhere all the time"? I would never claim that new faces, voices, and people are not just as valuable as old ones. That is insane. Also if it is bad if I did think that incumbency is necessary 100% of the time, why is it not bad for you to think that incumbency should be disqualifying 100% of the time? Both absolutes are insane and term limits are that second absolute with minimum padding.

Most of the problems in Congress seems to stem from the longevity of office with the complacency and stagnation that comes with it. Congress members shirk responsibilities, take excessive recesses, and have become so entrenched that true compromise seems hopeless.

I see how that can be true but not how it is always true. I think pinning all of that on people's ability to hold office for a whole amounts to reducing our entire political climate to "the 'term limits' switch is off and that means all of our problems can be blamed on that switch". Unless you can convincingly show me that incumbency always inevitably leads to those actions in a direct way then there will always be less drastic solutions that can have us keep our good incumbents. It is possible to be pro baby and anti bathwater.

The current state of Congress would certainly make for a bad case study for no term limits.

Excellent point. However, I don't think all of this can be pinned on term limits. Gerrymandering and representitives having to constsntly fundraise are enourmous issues that cause this terrible state as well.

With an approval rating in the teens we already seem to be at rock bottom, so it's difficult position to argue that term limits will make the situation worse.

And that doesn't mean we throw any reform and punishment that we can at congress. It means we actually look at our options before implementing them. When I looked in to it, I haven't seen anywhere where term limits have actually helped and have seen many places where they sctually hurt. Next option please.

I share your desire for experienced members of Congress, but the current members don't seem to have the kind of experience we need with all this gridlock we see.

Exactly. We agree on many of the issues in congress and even that a good amount of congressman have experience that is like letting a patient bleed out. That again doesn't mean that literally any solution/punishment we find will be an improvement. I'd be happy to legalize literal Gracchi style throwing obstinant congressmen out of the capital if it helped. However, that measure clearly only results in bruised, slightly more swole congressmen and that isn't the result that I want. Inexperience, a soft ban on old people, and increased lobbying control are not results I want so I oppose this measure.
